When it comes to finding the right WordPress performance optimization service, most site owners expect speed, but the best ones deliver security, stability, and speed together. At WPX, that’s exactly what our dedicated Security and Optimization Team is built to do.

At WPX, our dedicated Security and Optimization Team takes care of exactly that – ensuring your site is not just secure, but also lightning fast.

Before diving into the optimization process, we always start with two essential steps:

A full website backup – for complete safety in case changes need to be reversed.

An initial scan – to detect and fix any existing issues before optimization begins.

Once your site is stable and ready, our experts follow a proven step-by-step optimization process.

But speed is only half the equation. Your site’s security runs in the background around the clock – our team continuously scans for malware, vulnerabilities, and suspicious activity, proactively cleaning and neutralizing threats before they ever become your problem. So while you focus on your business, we’re quietly keeping the bad actors out.

1. Smart Caching Setup: The Foundation of Speed

Caching is one of the biggest game-changers in web performance. It allows browsers and servers to store frequently used data so pages load faster for visitors.

Our team reviews your website’s caching headers and sets up intelligent caching configurations tailored to your hosting environment.

For most sites, we use top-rated free plugins like W3 Total Cache or LiteSpeed Cache, with WPX-recommended settings.

For premium solutions like WP Rocket, we apply our own optimized configurations or customize them to fit your site’s unique needs.

The result is faster loading times, reduced server load, and a smoother browsing experience.

2. Page Optimization: Streamlining CSS, JS, and HTML

Modern websites rely heavily on stylesheets, scripts, and HTML – sometimes that backfires. Unoptimized code can slow everything down.

We identify which files can be safely minified and combined, reducing their size and eliminating unnecessary requests. This makes your pages load quicker and boosts your performance scores across major testing tools like Google PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix.

3. Image Optimization: Speed Without Sacrificing Quality

Heavy images are one of the main culprits behind slow pages. To fix that, our team:

Compresses images to reduce file size;

Converts them into next-gen formats such as WebP;

Implements lazy loading so images only load when they appear on screen.

This results in visually stunning, yet lightweight websites that score higher on performance tests and deliver a better user experience.

4. Database Optimization: Cleaning Up Behind the Scenes

Over time, WordPress databases accumulate clutter – old revisions, expired transients, spam comments, and more. These leftovers slow down database queries and overall site performance.

Our specialists clean and optimize your database, making it leaner and faster without touching any critical data.

5. Fonts Optimization: Faster Text Rendering

Fonts are often overlooked, but they can delay how quickly content appears on your screen. We use techniques like font-display: swap to make sure your text shows up immediately while the custom fonts finish loading.

This small tweak makes your site feel faster and improves user experience, especially on slower connections.

6. A Risk-Free Optimization Experience

Every optimization step is completely safe and reversible, thanks to our mandatory pre-optimization backup. If anything doesn’t meet your expectations, we can easily roll your site back to its original state.

At WPX, optimization isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Each website has different needs, themes, and plugins, and our experts adapt accordingly to deliver the best possible results.

And while your site stays optimized, our security layer never sleeps. We run ongoing, automated scans across your website – catching malware, injections, and emerging threats in real time and wiping them out before they cause damage. It’s not reactive cleanup after something goes wrong – it’s proactive, continuous protection baked into your hosting from day one.

By focusing on caching, page optimization, image and database cleanup, and font efficiency, our Security & Optimization Team ensures your WordPress site performs at its absolute best-secure, stable, and fast.

Don’t just take our word for it. Hundreds of WPX customers have experienced the difference firsthand – faster sites, cleaner databases, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing their security is handled.
WordPress website security isn’t just about firewalls and passwords – it’s about staying one step ahead of threats. At WPX, our Security and Optimization Team is on constant watch, ready to detect and remove malware before it causes trouble.

That proactive approach allows us to provide fast and reliable WordPress malware removal while minimizing downtime and protecting your website’s reputation.

Even better, you don’t have to lift a finger. Our systems and experts take care of everything, from detecting issues to restoring your site’s health fast and securely. Our proactive approach to security and fast response times make WPX a trusted solution for WordPress malware removal when websites are compromised.

Always-On Protection: Daily Server Scans

Every WPX server runs automated daily malware scans, constantly monitoring your website for suspicious activity. These scans search for harmful files, hidden code injections, or other signs of compromise.

If something looks off, our Security and Optimization Team steps in immediately – often before you even realize there’s a problem. That means your site stays protected 24/7 without you needing to spot or report anything yourself.

Step 1: Scanning for Malware and Vulnerabilities

When malware is detected, our first step is a comprehensive scan of your website’s files and database.

We look for:

Known malware signatures and injected code;

Suspicious file names or unexpected modifications to WordPress Core files;

Vulnerabilities caused by outdated plugins or themes;

Weak points in older WordPress versions.

This step ensures we fully understand where the infection is and how it spreads, allowing for a complete and safe cleanup.

Step 2: Checking the Database and User Accounts

Malicious code doesn’t only hide in files – it can also lurk inside your database or user tables.

Our experts carefully inspect for:

Embedded scripts or hidden SQL injections;

Suspicious admin accounts or unknown users;

Altered permissions or injected database entries.

Once identified, these malicious elements are removed immediately to prevent future attacks.

Step 3: Isolating and Analyzing Infected Files

Next, our team separates the infected files from the clean ones. By identifying whether the problem lies in the WordPress Core, plugins, or themes, we can handle each case appropriately.

For example:

Infected core files are safely replaced with clean versions;

Compromised plugin or theme files are repaired manually – without wiping out your custom work or developer modifications.

This precision ensures that cleanup doesn’t interfere with your site’s functionality.

Step 4: Manual Malware Cleanup and File Restoration

Once infected files are isolated, our team performs a detailed manual cleanup. Depending on the infection, they may:

Remove the malicious code from specific files;

Reinstall safe versions of plugins or themes from the official WordPress repository;

Restore clean copies of custom files from recent backups.

By combining automated scans with expert intervention, our team delivers thorough WordPress malware removal without disrupting your website’s functionality.

Step 5: Deep Inspection of Uploads and Hidden Directories

A common trick hackers use is to hide malicious scripts in your uploads folder, disguised as harmless images or PDFs.

That’s why our experts comb through every directory, checking for:

Recently added or suspicious files;

Unexpected file types or hidden items;

Hidden .htaccess or mu-plugins/ folders with harmful directives.

Every corner of your site is inspected, cleaned, and secured.

Step 6: Restoring a Clean WordPress Core, Plugins, and Themes

To make sure your site stays secure long-term, our team reinstalls fresh copies of your WordPress core, plugins, and themes.

This not only removes any remaining malware traces but also updates your website to the latest versions, fixing vulnerabilities from outdated plugins or themes that hackers often exploit.

Step 7: Final Security Scan and Verification

After the cleanup, our specialists perform a final deep scan to confirm your site is 100% malware-free. This ensures that every suspicious file, database entry, or code fragment has been completely removed – leaving your site in pristine condition and running securely.

Step 8: Transparent Communication and Recommendations

Once everything is done, our team sends you a detailed report outlining what was found, what was fixed, and how your site was restored.

You’ll also receive expert recommendations on how to keep your website secure going forward – including tips for safe plugin updates and regular maintenance.

Keeping Your WordPress Site Secure for the Long Run

Our daily server scans, expert malware cleanup, and proactive update checks ensure your website stays clean, fast, and safe – without any downtime or stress.

While OptinMonster is known as a marketing tool for creating pop-ups and growing email lists, it’s engineered with speed in mind. A bonus tool that balances marketing and performance beautifully.

Unlike many similar tools that slow down your site, OptinMonster only loads when needed – keeping your website fast and your marketing effective.

Why Speed Optimization Matters

Optimizing your website’s speed isn’t just about convenience – it’s about growth. Faster websites:

Improve user experience, keeping visitors engaged longer;

Boost search engine rankings, especially on Google;

Increase conversion rates, because happy visitors are more likely to buy or subscribe;

Strengthen your brand reputation by showing professionalism and reliability.

And while the right plugins go a long way, the foundation your site runs on matters just as much. WPX Hosting is built specifically for WordPress performance, with plans designed to accelerate load times, handle traffic spikes, and keep your site running at its best – so every optimization you make works harder. And if you want hands-on help, our On-Demand Optimizations service lets our team step in and fine-tune your site directly.

Final Thoughts

In this article, we will cover some of the more advanced features that can be used with WordPress to further develop your website. Custom Fields is something like an upgrade to your existing Gutenberg Editor and provides you with a better system with which you can manage your content. It gives you a better perspective than just being your regular blogging platform.

What does Custom Fields offer to WordPress?

Custom Fields in WordPress allows you to add additional functionality for your pages and content. For example, if you are looking to sell products through the site, you can add different characteristics like how much they cost, if it’s furniture, how much it weighs, and much more.

Another example is having a website for different events and gatherings. If you wish to notify your visitors of an upcoming party, then you can add Custom Fields and a specific plugin related to Calendar Events to link and show the location and time.

Additionally, you can use other minor features such as custom pages, forms or even Gutenberg blocks.

Built-in Custom Fields for WordPress

An important topic to touch on is that WordPress itself offers some kind of custom fields that are integrated without the need of an additional plugin.

To enable them, you need to start by selecting New (1) and from there an example Page (2):

From there, you need to select the Three Dots (1) which will show you the different options on the Gutenberg Editor. You need to select Preferences (2):

Once that is done, you officially have enabled the Custom Fields that WordPress has to offer. You can now create new ones using different Names and Values:

That being said, if you are just starting out, the functional WordPress Custom Fields are not easy to understand and can be difficult at first if you do not read how to properly use them. An alternative to that is different plugins that you can use and their role is to make everything more user-friendly and add additional features.

When to use Custom Fields in WordPress

The next topic would be when and how to properly utilize Custom Fields. It is important to note that everything connected to WordPress offers something specific to your individual needs. That being said, you need to distinguish and know when to use those features instead of just going with them without any real direction or goal.

To further give insight on the examples from the beginning of the article, one way to put it is automatically creating blocks of information that help you create quicker. For example, creating a Custom Field that links through an Event Calendar plugin. That way, when you make a page, every time you will have the field integrated and you can simply choose the date/location and time without the need to type it in plain text.

Another thing to note is that if you integrate Custom Fields throughout your website, it will provide a more user-friendly experience, where they know what they get on each page, as far as structure and content.

The last thing to mention is sustainability. If you wish to change a certain Custom Field and how it displays the information, you simply need to do it on one page, all the others that have the same one integrated will automatically add the new information as well. That being said, you do not need to manually go through every page and update the same Custom Field every time you want to make a change.

More information on how to assign custom fields can be read here.

That’s it! We covered all the basic information on using Custom Fields in WordPress. If you have any questions on the topic, do not hesitate to contact our support on LiveChat or Ticket 24/7.

In this article, we will cover the most common WordPress mistakes and how to avoid or fix them, depending on where you are currently reading the article. While it is understandable to make mistakes, fixing or avoiding future issues could be the key to speeding up your business development and establishing a trusting connection with your clients through a stable website.

First, we will start with the fundamentals of managing a WordPress website and, more importantly, keeping the platform updated and with proper security. Then, we will go through all the nitty gritty specifics of making essential choices that will let you avoid potential mistakes.

Disabling or Ignoring WordPress Updates

Whether it be incremental (minor) updates to different WordPress plugins or themes you are using or a big one connected to the entire version of PHP, it is mandatory and highly recommended to stay on top of it. WordPress allows you to ease into the process by giving you automatic updates, whether or not a plugin or theme needs to be updated, and if a new version is out.

Information: Before making significant updates, such as upgrading to another version of WordPress, you should make a quick backup of your website just in case something goes wrong. It is better to have a Plan B and stay on the safe side.

Important: Another essential part of keeping everything updated is security. Many backdoor malware and infections come from outdated plugins/themes and WordPress versions, so to avoid them and stay safe, keep an eye on them.

Leaving multiple plugins installed on your WordPress website

Another big topic and common mistake when handling WordPress is the chaos of installed plugins and themes. At first, this is all for testing purposes, checking to see what you want and which to use to develop your website. However, a thorough cleanup is needed afterward.

Leftover installed plugins or themes that are left inactive, and you do not plan to use should be deleted. Even if they are inactive, they still take space from your account and passively consume resources. This could lead to a slow backend and dashboard in general. The slower performance of the website on the front end depends on how many active plugins you have and which are being utilized.

Information: Another big issue to mention is plugin conflict. This could lead to performance issues, actual downtime, and critical errors. It is essential to use one plugin for the specific thing you want. For example, if you want a cache plugin to preload your images and improve your performance, you do not need another one or three cache plugins simultaneously.

If you are using a specific page builder as a plugin, stay within its functionalities. Most of these plugins have add-ons or different sub-parent plugins connected to them. Using them in that way is better than using two or three separate plugin builders simultaneously, which consumes many resources and will most likely hurt your website performance and workflow.

Quick choice with a theme for your WordPress website

It is important not to rush and choose the first theme you like on your WordPress site. That is the most common mistake when it comes to developing the website. A lot of factors need to go into consideration when choosing the correct one for you and your website:

Theme provider and development team connected to it. Choosing one that will be supported down the road with newer versions and potentially new features that could help you out is essential. That is not something that can be guaranteed. However, it can be determined by the number of installations on WordPress websites, its reputation, and online forums.

Information: An important tip when choosing a theme or plugin, for that matter, is to check for online forums and opinions of other users who have tried and used it. What are the pros and cons depending on different perspectives would help you check the boxes for your ultimate decision.

Every provider also updates its documentation for each theme, and whichever you choose directly from the WordPress database, you can check its updates and see when the last one was made. For example, if the theme is not supported or has slow updates once every two or three years, then that would be a potential risk in terms of security and longevity when using it. The security aspect is something we covered in the first topic, and the second one is connected to known bugs or issues that each theme can or could have. A slow update would mean you need to wait longer, disrupting your workflow and plans of developing the website altogether.

Another thing to consider is the theme’s performance and whether it offers a mobile-friendly environment as well. That is strictly connected to the website being fast on both desktop and mobile versions. This is essential to provide the best user experience for your visitors.

The last thing to mention when choosing themes is the support it offers, depending on the provider and if it is free or paid. Support forums or general Discord forums are where other users discuss issues that they need to solve. That is very helpful when working with that specific theme, not only having developer help from the provider if an issue arises but to having a community with which you can relate things you want to be improved on the theme or potential issues that you are having.

Information: A good thing to mention is having made a wrong decision and what comes with it as a consequence. Switching to another theme is a hassle, and it changes the way everything works. Everything you have made through the old theme will be deleted or changed. That is why it is essential to avoid general website re-work by following the steps we recommended earlier.

Going with any Hosting Provider

Another vital part not directly connected to your website is the provider you choose for hosting purposes. The most common mistake people make is choosing the cheapest hosting provider and going through all the hassles until they decide to move everything to something better.

That decision is something that a lot of our current and future clients make when moving hosting providers. The main reasons are underlying costs such as making a backup for the website or checking for malware or slow and unresponsive support, which takes forever to answer basic questions and much more.

It is crucial to have the stability of known server locations and uptime and to have support throughout the entire process, from sales questions to moving your websites or creating a new account. At WPX, we offer all that and more with our free features, such as free optimizations, free migrations, and 24/7 support on both chat and ticket systems.

Having the peace of mind to concentrate on your websites and online business is essential. It can provide you with the workspace to get new ideas and dive into growing them instead of worrying if your website will be down tomorrow or having to contact support and get an answer the next day.

Not making use of all the hosting features that are provided

One of the most common WordPress mistakes clients make is not utilizing the hosting provider to its full potential. That would include help with anything technical, depending on the scope and what is offered as a policy, and using features such as backup systems, optimizations, cleaning infections, and much more.

First things first, at WPX, we offer FFY policy, which we stand by and is one of our most renowned features. It is something that we teach and do automatically without the need for our customers to ask for it. That would include proactively handling all technical related issues and tasks for WordPress.

The next thing would be not taking advantage of the free optimizations WPX offers for each website per year (365 days). That includes having manual work from a specialized Security and Optimization Team going through the website with the client’s permission and doing their best to make everything faster.

Using and utilizing XDN (CDN Network) for all of your websites. That is a feature that most hosting providers ask for additional pay for or have a set limitation on, whilst with WPX there isn’t any. You simply tick over a box next to the website and have multiple caching locations to provide the best user experience for your visitors.

The last thing to mention is free malware removal at WPX. That is another thing that most clients move over to do with us. Other hosting companies offer the same but use an external company with a higher cost, which could go up to 200$. Another thing to mention is that some providers use an automatic plugin for cleanup, which is not ideal. It can not provide you with a summary of what is done and what guarantee you have that it won’t happen in the future.

Not using SEO for better results on your WordPress website

Number 6 in our list of the most common WordPress mistakes is the way you present content on your website. That goes from the style and font to the type of writing and if it is copied from anywhere.

It is important to take note not to make these specific mistakes when building your online website:

Poorly written content without specific keywords. Sometimes, writing your thoughts for something like a blog or reviewing a product must be taken seriously. Researching keywords is essential for the type of content you want to display not only on the page itself but in its permalink structure and URL. A good read for making better descriptions and meta tags for the pages and products you create can be read here.

Another one of the most common WordPress mistakes is copying content or plain text directly from other sources of information. While that may seem harmless at first glance, it can be copyrighted, and a DMCA TakeDown Notice can be sent to the hosting provider to delete the content or disable the website. Make sure that the content is authentic to the topic or product. Keep in mind when using entire brand names. A good tip is to contact them beforehand and ask for permission or come to a license agreement of fair use where you are protected with legal documents to use the specific brand or product mentioned on your website.

Not using SEO plugins that can help you index the content. Plugins like Yoast SEO can help you generate a sitemap. Think of it as a map displayed on the internet where each page and category is linked and has a complete structure. Search engine bots can index your website much better, especially when you remove or add new pages. That way, you can have the best chance for your SEO ranking, connected to where your website appears when a potential visitor searches for a topic.

Not protecting your Contact Form and filtering spam

Another vital mistake when starting a WordPress website is ignoring the Contact Form. That includes not protecting it from automatic bots and phishing spam that can be used to target your email address, which is connected to the specific form.

The first and most essential thing to do is to protect your Contact Form with CAPTCHA. That is something well-known for everyone that displays boxes and a generic question to answer that stops automatic bots and prevents spam comments from being made on your posts or pages.

Another important thing to do is protect the email address you connect to the contact form. That can be done with a secure password and an Unsubscribe button to each sent email as an option to opt out if needed from the recipients. That way, you can avoid potential phishing reports that can target your website and lead to the disabling of the mail function or email service altogether.

The last thing to do is regularly check and delete spam comments, if any. Adding different filters through the contact form, such as additional fields of information from the commentator,s can also help with that. Keeping your site clean from spam messages not only benefits the overall view of the website but also increases the trust of potential visitors who are going to read through the pages.

That’s it! We have reviewed the most common WordPress mistakes. We hope that at least one of the recommendations was helpful for you to grow your online blog or business. If anything is unclear, don’t hesitate to contact our support via chat or ticket.

When you install WordPress locally on your computer, it allows you to create a safe, private server environment for development and testing. I will walk you through setting up WordPress locally so that you can work on your site safely and efficiently. If you have ever wanted to explore WordPress features privately, redesign your site without impacting the live version, or test multiple plugins without risking site stability, this guide is for you!

As WordPress continues to evolve, powerful new tools have emerged to streamline rapid testing and development for WordPress websites. In this guide, we’ll explore two standout options: Studio and LocalWP, both available for Mac and Windows users. These tools offer versatile, easy-to-use solutions that simplify WordPress development and enhance productivity, regardless of your operating system.

Install WordPress locally with Studio

Studio by WordPress is a modern, desktop-based development environment that simplifies WordPress website building and testing. Created by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, Studio offers an all-in-one toolkit to help developers and designers quickly set up, customize, and test WordPress sites locally on their computers.

Before we dive into subdomains and how to use them properly, we need to go through the foundation and that is the domain. In other terms Top-Level Domain is the main name you have chosen for your website. You can think of it as a type of URL extension and it has different parts. The domain is the main part of the URL that is displayed on the internet.

TLDs are the end part of the URL extension. They indicate the type of category you have chosen with your main domain name. Examples of that would be (com, net, org etc.) different types of domains that you want to attach to your personal needs, such as commercial ones, organizational ones or even country specific ones (uk, de, nl).

The domain is the root and foundation for everything else. In other words, there is no subdomain without an actual domain to link it to.

What is a Subdomain

The subdomain is a continuation of the domain URL. If the domain is Top-Level Domain (TLD), then the subdomain should be secondary or in other terms Second-Level Domain (SLD). In one instance, it can be used to branch out and provide different types of content which is user friendly. For example, with WPX we have a Top-Level domain which provides our main hosting website and what we offer. On the other hand, we have a separate knowledge base specifically made for our clients on a subdomain for all kinds of inquiries and articles that help with the hosting experience.

To summarize the first example, it is to better organize what you offer to the world with your content or business. Another way of thinking about it is user experience. If you have a lot of content or various services, it would be difficult to organize everything on one domain and make it so the visitors get to every part they want without a hassle.

The same explanation goes for other branches of services. For example if you have an online business for kitchens which offers various services like appliances, then you can think of a subdomain as another smaller branch which offers that specific thing you want your audience to be targeted for.

How to create a subdomain with WPX

Now that we have gone through everything concerning domains and subdomains, you can continue to create a subdomain through the WPX Hosting Panel.

We have a specific article in order to create the type of website you want, whether that is another domain or a subdomain.

In addition to having subdomains, there are further options such as subfolders which can be different WordPress installations within the given domain or subdomain for that matter.

Depending on your ideas and what you want to achieve, you can create an entire ecosystem of domains and subdomains to experiment and provide the best for your audience.

That’s it! Everything was covered from explanations about domains and subdomains and how to create them through our separate article.

If you have any questions regarding the topic, please make sure to contact our customer support which is available 24/7 via LiveChat or Email Ticket system.

In this article, we will cover one of the more frustrating WordPress Errors that you may encounter: 504 Gateway Timeout. It is directly connected to the functionality of your website and can cause it to go down temporarily or just be simply unreachable on your end. The important parts for this article will be structured as to understanding the issue and identifying the culprit that may have caused it. In addition, we will go through some steps that you can do yourself in order to try and troubleshoot the error: “504 Gateway Timeout”.

Understanding “504 Gateway Timeout” WordPress Error”

In most cases, this error pops up when doing something in the background like bulk updating all of your plugins or themes, making multiple changes from more than several tabs open on your machine, which could lead to it. The error in general will display that your website “took too long to respond”.

To explain the error in simpler terms, it is connected to the resources that your web server has allocated and allows a number of processes to be made at the same time. For example, every action you make on your website is done through a request that is forwarded to the server for completion. If the tasks exceed the number of requests that are set as a limit, they will get in queue until some are completed and space is made for others. If that queue passes the estimated time for completion on that server, then it will automatically “kill” or terminate the process which you are trying to make, leading to the specific 504 Gateway Timeout Error.

If the case is too many requests for a short period of time and you stop, the website should be back up pretty quick. On the other hand, if the processes are connected to plugins that work in the background automatically or themes that are heavy and not optimized in general, then the issue will not fix itself by just not doing anything.

Troubleshooting “504 Gateway Timeout” WordPress Error”

To start the process of troubleshooting, you need to trace your steps to how you got the error in the first place. If you got it while working on the background of your website, then check if you have multiple tabs open doing several different tasks and try to minimize them to one or two, in order to free up server time to complete the processes you want.

If you got it while trying to update your plugins and themes in bulk, then try to do it one by one to minimize the time that the request will take up for one at a time, then all together.

However, if the issue is connected to a slow backend and the most simple tasks like choosing to browse through the tabs or install a single plugin cause the error, then something else is eating up the server resources. In that case there are very few things you can do to troubleshoot, but you can still try and see if you can figure it out yourself. One of the more time consuming ones is to figure out if a plugin is causing the issue. To do that, you would need to disable them all and check if the speed of the website is increased and you get that error again. If you don’t, then try enabling them one by one with the same trial and error tasks you make to figure out which one is the culprit. A good tip is to check your plugins and delete the ones you do not plan to use. The recommendation for deletion instead of just disabling the plugin comes from the server resource standpoint. Even if the plugin is disabled, it can still use up some resources and thus lead to the bigger issue at hand, and that is the error.

Occasionally, but very rarely there is a slim chance that you can troubleshoot the error simply by clearing the cache on your browser or trying another one to connect to your website. That however is mostly related to connectivity issues which sometimes make the same error code. For example, if you are using a VPN (that changes your IP Address) and for some reason it does not work or the internet is not stable, there is a chance that you get a 504 Error without an actual issue on the web server itself. Try to check with a different connection or mobile hotspot to make sure that these things are not related to the error code.

If you are still having an issue with the website and are experiencing issues with the troubleshoot or in general, do not have enough time to do everything that is explained above, then you can always contact our support with 24/7 coverage and sub 30-second response on chat to check and fix it for you. Additionally, we have a dedicated Security and Optimization Team which can take a look at your website in-depth and not only determine the cause of the issue but even optimize for better performance.

In this article, we will review one of the more common WordPress Errors: “Could not create directory”. The term itself does not point out the specific issue that needs to be debugged, however, we will go through the more well-known fixes that can help you resolve it.

Understanding the WordPress Error

Before we go through the fixes, we need to first understand the issue thoroughly in order to have logical troubleshooting. As with all WordPress Errors, they do not indicate the exact culprit, however, they can give you hints as to the process that triggered it. For example, in most cases, this error is connected to uploading images via Media Library, installing plugins/themes, or even updating them. You will need to pinpoint the exact thing you made that got you the error so you can have somewhere to start.

In simpler terms, the error indicates the inability to create a directory for the new plugin that you wish to install or maybe an image that you would like to upload to your site. In addition, this may be caused due to incorrect file permissions or not having enough disk space on your current hosting plan.

How to Fix “Installation Failed: Could not create directory” WordPress Error?

We can go through the rabbit hole of different fixes that are common and should provide a solution for this specific WordPress error. The first one should be connected to simply checking file permissions on the wp-content folder of your website. To go in detail of why that folder and not another one is simply connected to the fact that the content folder holds all of your website files that are uploaded through the Admin Dashboard. That includes all images and plugins/themes that you may want to install or update. As we mentioned earlier, it is important to understand that the error occurs mostly while doing work connected to the above from the admin area.

Now, to go through the actual fix, you would need to log in to your WPX Account. You can either find your hosting service through the navigation menu or within your dashboard. Once you log in to your WPX account select My Services (1) → WordPress Hosting (2):

The correct file permissions that you need to set to allow you to install plugins, upload images, and so forth need to be 755 or 644 which are the default WordPress settings. That can be typed in a field directly and choose Change:

Once that is done, you can try to troubleshoot the same process you went through to see if the issue is fixed. If the errors still pops up, then you can continue from the same place where we left off and check your disk space to make sure that is not another reason for not being able to make changes on the backend of your website.

To check your usage, you simply need to go into your File Manager again and see the top right corner of the client, where you will see the overall usage for your plan and the space that’s taken up:

In this article, we are going to look at one of the two more popular choices for online business and shopping – WooCommerce and OpenCart. We are going to make a comparison and go through the platforms in order for our readers to get a grasp which offers more and what suits them better in terms of their goals.

General Overview of OpenCart vs. WooCommerce

As a platform OpenCart was founded back in 2008 and it is an open-source platform which provides ecommerce software without the need to attach it to a specific website or domain unlike WooCommerce which provides all WordPress users an option to build their own website with the needed tools and set up an online business.

In general WooCommerce as a platform is bigger and more widely known since it is mainly attached to WordPress as a whole and that means that all users that need to set up a shop will generally go with the Ecommerce platform that is large and with a good reputation. Since it comes in the form of a plugin, it is very user-friendly and provides a quick setup for anyone without the need of advanced technical skills.

With OpenCart you get a more individual space where you can be free of branding a specific business in terms of choosing a domain name and a website. As mentioned earlier, with the Ecommerce software they offer, you can create multiple shops that match the needs for users that do not want to build a website on any platform.

OpenCart for Online Business

While it provides individual e-commerce shops and is mainly designed for E-Commerce and online businesses, setting up OpenCart can be a challenge for novice users and in general people starting off without proper technical knowledge. It uses most of what WordPress is based on, which is PHP and MySQL in terms of software.

The installation process would require you to have hosting somewhere or at least a private server in which you can create a database and download the files from their official website. The process is well documented and straightforward, however, on the other hand it could be bothersome to do without any technical help.

On the other hand, it is highly customizable and provides a lot of options when set up properly for the user. Categorizing different products, having the option to choose from over 500 different OpenCart themes to grasp your visual ideas from. Another good mention is that it allows you to have multiple versions of different stores which you can link through one single installation. That becomes handy if you have different businesses that are somehow linked with each other and you can manage them through one interface.

WooCommerce for Online Business

WooCommerce is not a standalone software which you can use unlike OpenCart, it is more or less an addon to the WordPress website a user has created and from there developed to an e-commerce online business.

The installation process here is pretty simple and it requires a live website in which you simply install a plugin to provide you with all the needed tools to start everything. It does not require any manual work and the most important part is, technical support can be found from the given hosting provider.

At WPX you can choose from different types of WooCommerce based plans with more resources to grow or transfer your already built online business. In addition to that, we provide 24/7 support with sub 30-second response time on chat.

Although WooCommerce lacks some of the flexibility OpenCart offers, it is much more user-friendly to set up on your website and associate a brand of business to it, linked to the domain name.

Final WooCommerce vs. OpenCart Comparison

To make things clear, we will go through both platforms with key features with which you can distinguish them and make your final choice on what your business needs best. We will try to go with different categories to make it easier to read through:

Cost and expenses for using OpenCart or WooCommerce

We should start with the cost of going with either and they are identical in some sense. Both are free as a standalone software that can be reviewed and downloaded, but follow-up with different paid options that are kind of necessary if you wish to keep building your business.

With OpenCart the costs come from owning a web server or a dedicated space where you can build your online store. The expense with WooCommerce comes from owning hosting and a domain which you can associate with a website in order to enable what it offers.

Installation process for OpenCart and WooCommerce

The next one is pretty important, that is the installation process. Both have enough documentation online and videos which can guide you through the entire process. To sum it up, OpenCart requires a lot of manual work to create a virtual space and a MySQL database which you need to link to the files you would need to download and upload via FTP Client.

It is important to note that there is a third party option to set up everything for you but that comes with additional cost. On the other hand, WooCommerce requires almost no manual technical work and the process is pretty automatic, from setting up a website, going through plugins and adding the tools you need.

SEO optimization for OpenCart and WooCommerce

This topic is pretty important given that any online business needs good ranking to appear on both ads and major trusted browsers. With OpenCart not having a website or domain to associate your store with is a double-edged sword since it provides a lot more flexibility but on the other hand is hard to be SEO-friendly.

It requires a lot of technical work and coding from developers to push in front of other online stores that have tools to leverage it through indexation and sitemap options for bots to crawl and browsers to show them in the first search pages.

With WooCommerce that part is pretty easy and involves a lot less developer work connected to the website itself. WordPress as a CMS offers a lot of plugins that are oriented to optimize your website’s SEO automatically.

Technical Support for OpenCart and WooCommerce

The last topic we would like to touch on is support which is essential for any online business, having that peace of mind that if something wrong happens, you can contact someone to fix it or at least give you pointers to what went wrong.

To start with OpenCart, they have a strong community support where you can contact other users that may have stumbled on similar issues. There is an option for dedicated support but with additional cost.

With WooCommerce you have professional technical support from the hosting provider you use. As mentioned earlier, WPX provides one of the best response times and will be glad to help with any technical issue you may be having with the website free of any additional charges.

To sum things up, if you have an online business and are technically aware of what needs to be done and are not afraid of getting into securing your own web server and building your online store, then OpenCart would be the option for you.

If you want to focus solely on your business without the need to worry about the technical setup or who will help if something goes wrong, then WooCommerce is the best option for you.

See how WooCommerce compares to Shopify, Magento, SureCart or Wix
