<\/span>Create a Backup of Your WordPress Site<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before you begin the cloning process, the first and most crucial step is to create a complete backup of your WordPress site. A backup safeguards your data and settings in case anything goes wrong during the cloning process. You can create a backup manually by downloading your WordPress files via FTP and exporting your database through phpMyAdmin. Alternatively, you can use popular WordPress plugins like All-in-One, UpdraftPlus or Duplicator for a quicker, automated backup solution. By securing a reliable backup, you\u2019ll have peace of mind and a solid foundation to restore your site if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this step-by-step walkthrough, we are going to be using the free version of the \u2018Duplicator WP plugin\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So first things first, we need to install and activate the Duplicator plugin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Activating the Duplicator plugin<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, we need to install the free Duplicator plugin, which can be found in the back end of WP from the \u201cAdd Plugins\u201d menu or here<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Creating a backup package<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After installing the Duplicator plugin, you have to create a \u201cPackage\u201d which you will move later to your new domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This \u2018Package\u2019 contains all of your website files and the database with an installer.php file which is needed for the second part of the process, as discussed below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s very easy to create the package \u2013 go to the Duplicator menu and click \u201cPackages\u201d, then click the \u201cCreate New\u201d button:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a lot of options on the next page and a lot of visible settings under the Storage, Archive, and Installer icons, but you don\u2019t have to touch any of them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just leave them as default and click on the \u201cNext\u201d button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Duplicator plugin will then scan your website files and database and check if they exceed the 500 Mb threshold of the free version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IMPORTANT: If your website is bigger than 500 Mbs, the plugin will not allow you to continue further (that means you will need to either reduce the size of the website or upgrade to the paid version).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There will also likely be some notices and warnings from the plugin but none of the described issues will prevent the plugin from properly working \u2013 for example, one of the warnings here about the \u201cPHP Open Base Dir\u201d is ON but that should not cause any issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From here, click the tick box, then the \u201cBuild\u201d button:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Downloading the package<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>After the \u2018Package\u2019 is built, you now have to download the \u201cInstaller\u201d and the \u201cArchive\u201d:<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

And you\u2019ve successfully completed Step 1 and created a backup of your WordPress website. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Set Up a New Environment and Uploading a Duplicator Package<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Uploading the Duplicator package is a step that brings your cloned WordPress site closer to completion. By transferring the package files to your new server, you\u2019ll prepare the site\u2019s data and configuration for quick deployment. This process ensures that everything from your original site is ready to be seamlessly restored and set up in the new environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note: You must add your new target domain to your hosting account BEFORE you continue further \u2013 we are using the current WPX user panel in this demo.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are not aware of how to do that please check the following <\/a>guide<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong> Both of those files can be uploaded via the WPX File Manager or FTP with FileZilla<\/strong><\/a>, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this example, we will use the WPX File Manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Navigate to the \/public_html<\/strong> of your new domain name.  Our new target domain is newsite.com (yours will be different, of course).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simply drag and drop BOTH the Installer and the Archive files in the empty \/public_html of your new domain name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After both files are uploaded, you have to run the installer file from the browser, which is easier than it sounds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Running the Duplicator installer<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the browser bar, type the new domain name slash installer.php \u2013 in this example this will be http:\/newsite.com\/installer.php<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If everything up to this point has been done correctly, this is what your screen should look like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only step left is to connect the database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Duplicator plugin will ask you for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/strong>User:<\/strong>
<\/strong>Password<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cHost<\/strong>\u201d is always localhost with WPX, as it\u2019s set by default. The rest of the required information you will need to copy from your own WPX User Panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cDatabase\u201d name can be found in the \u201cDatabases\u201d menu in your WPX Client Panel. Navigate to your Client Panel<\/strong> \u2192 Database<\/strong> (1) and copy the database name<\/strong> (2) that is connected to your new website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, you need to create a database user for your website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you are in the \u201cDatabase\u201d menu \u2013 click on the \u201cAdd new database user\u201d button on the right-hand side of your website\u2019s database:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the next step, the Duplicator plugin screen shows you your new URL and the new path to your files which the plugin will use to automatically search and replace in the database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
