Things to Consider Before Proceeding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before pushing your staging site live using this method, there are a few important precautions to keep in mind to ensure a smooth and safe process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Back Up Your Live Site<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Always create a backup of your live site before making major changes. You can use a backup plugin or, even better, the built-in Backup Manager<\/strong> in your WPX Control Panel to create a Personal Backup<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You won’t be able to create a backup during the “merge” step because the files of the live website will already be deleted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Expect Temporary Downtime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Replacing your staging site with the live site will delete all content in the live website. The process involves deleting the existing site files and database before restoring the staging version. As a result, temporary downtime is expected<\/strong> during the transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure you’re comfortable with how the WPX Control Panel works before initiating this step. If needed, refer to the full hosting panel overview for guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Keep Tools Ready<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To minimize downtime and respond quickly if needed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prepare a simple HTML maintenance page<\/strong> <\/a>to upload temporarily. This reassures visitors and avoids confusion from seeing broken pages or error messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep phpMyAdmin<\/a><\/strong> and the File Manager<\/a><\/strong> tabs open in your browser before starting the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Understand What the Merge Does<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This method does not use the actual merge option incorporated within the Control Panel. This is a full replacement<\/strong> of your live site with the staging version. Any recent content, user activity, or changes made on the live site that are not present in the staging site will be lost<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1. Log in to your WPX account<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Begin by logging into your WPX account. You can do this by visiting the WPX login page<\/a>.\u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2. Go to Control Panel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once logged in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Locate your hosting plan in the WPX client area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Click the Control Panel<\/strong> button next to the plan you wish to manage.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    If you have more than five hosting plans of the same type (WordPress, Agency or WooCommerce), not all may appear on the homepage. Use the WordPress Hosting<\/strong>, Agency Hosting<\/strong> or WooCommerce Hosting<\/strong> tab in the left-hand menu to find your service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Step 3. Prepare phpMyAdmin<\/strong> and File Manager<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    To minimize downtime, let’s open phpMyAdmin<\/strong> and the File Manager <\/strong>in different tabs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We’ll use phpMyAdmin <\/strong>to delete the database content of the live site using the drop option. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To open the phpMyAdmin<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Select Databases <\/strong>to preview all databases in this hosting plan<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Check the database name of your live website to know which content should be deleted later. In our case, that is example_site. <\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Click on phpMyAdmin<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Okay, keep it open in a new tab and get back to the control panel to prepare the File Manager. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      We will use the File Manager<\/strong> to delete all files except wp-config.php and the maintenance page, if you’ve set one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      To open the File Manager: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Go to FTP Users & Files<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Select File Manager <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Before you proceed further, locate the live site files, which are stored in its public_html directory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        In our example, our live site is the main site. The files of the main website are located in public_html. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        If the site you’re using is not your main one, you can find its files in the domains\/yourlivesite.net\/public_htm<\/em>l directory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Now that you have everything prepared, let’s start by dropping the database of the live site using phpMyAdmin<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Step 4. Drop the Database of the live site <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        Open the tab with your phpMyAdmin<\/strong> and follow the steps to drop the database: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Select the Live site database<\/strong>, in our case example_site. <\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        2. Scroll down in the right panel and select all tables<\/strong> by checking the Check all <\/strong>box.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        3. Right-click with the mouse to open the menu and choose Drop<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          In the confirmation prompt, click Yes<\/strong> to delete the tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Step 5. Delete all Files except wp-config<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          Once the database is dropped, it’s time to remove the Live site files. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          When deleting files, ensure that wp-config.php<\/code> is not selected for deletion.<\/strong>
          This file is essential to the merge process, as it contains the database connection details required to successfully replace your live site with the staging version.

          If wp-config.php<\/code> is missing from the pubcli_html directory during the merge; the operation will fail.

          Double-check that this file remains intact to avoid errors and ensure a smooth deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Go to the File Manager tab that you’ve already prepared. And open the live site’s public_html directory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. Make sure you are in the correct website directory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          2. Select all files except<\/strong> the wp-config.php<\/code><\/strong> file (and if you set up an HTML maintenance page, exclude it too). <\/li>\n\n\n\n
          3. Click on the Bin<\/strong> button to delete the selected files.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          4. A pop-up window will appear to confirm the changes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            Step 6. Replace the Live Site with the Staging Site<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            These are the final and easiest steps: we’ll use the merge button to complete the replacement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            1. Navigate to the Staging<\/strong> section <\/strong>in your WPX Control Panel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            2. Locate <\/strong>the Staging site you want to merge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            3. Click the Merge<\/strong> button next to it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

              You will not need a backup of your live site because we’ve already deleted its content. You can uncheck that option and continue with merging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Once the merge process is complete, a pop-up notification will appear in the upper-right corner of your panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
