GoDaddy Just Changed the Rules on 21 Million Customers – Without Warning

GoDaddy changed its TOS

Kudos to webhosting.today for breaking this story.

If you’re one of GoDaddy’s 21 million customers, here’s something you need to know:

GoDaddy quietly changed its rules on February 2, 2026 – and the changes are not in your favor.

No email.

No warning.

No option to say no.

No future implementation date.

And it also affects GoDaddy customers in Europe.

That’s rude.

Here’s what happened, what it means for you, and why it might be time to find a hosting provider that actually treats you like a human being.

WHAT EXACTLY DID GODADDY JUST DO?

GoDaddy rewrote its Terms of Service – the legal agreement that governs your relationship with the company.

The new rules went live immediately.

The biggest change?

GoDaddy now calls every single customer a “business customer.”

That includes you, even if you just have a personal blog, a hobby website, or a domain you registered to protect your name.

Under the new rules, you’re considered a business customer if you do any of the following:

  • Blog or create content online
  • Use your website for freelance work or consulting
  • Have a personal brand or professional online presence
  • Own a domain for career purposes
  • Do anything that “supports economic activity” — which is so broad it could apply to almost anyone

Even if your website is purely personal, GoDaddy’s new terms say you’re acknowledging that you use their services for “business, trade, or professional purposes.”

You don’t get a say in that.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER TO YOU?

The word “consumer” and the word “business” might sound similar, but legally, they are very different.

Consumers get special legal protections that businesses do not. By calling all of its customers “business users,”

GoDaddy may be stripping away rights that you were previously entitled to.

Here’s what could change for you:

In Europe? Consumers normally have the right to cancel an online purchase within 14 days and get a full refund.

That right doesn’t apply to businesses.

If GoDaddy now classifies you as a business customer, you may lose that protection.

In the US? Consumer class-action lawsuits have historically been one way customers could hold big companies accountable.

The new GoDaddy terms make it far harder to join a class action.

Instead, you’d have to fight GoDaddy alone through a process called arbitration – and the filing fee just jumped from about $200 to over $2,300.

Everywhere else? If GoDaddy makes you an offer to settle a dispute and you turn it down but win less than that amount, you’d have to pay GoDaddy’s legal costs after that point.

That’s a powerful tool designed to discourage you from fighting back.

THE NEW FINE PRINT IS STACKED AGAINST YOU

Let’s break down a few more of the new rules in plain language:

  • You gave up your right to a jury trial. The previous terms didn’t include this. The new ones do – quietly tucked in.
  • You must travel to Arizona to dispute anything in person. If you live in the UK, Australia, or anywhere outside the US, that’s your problem.
  • You have to wait 60 days before you can even start a dispute. And during that waiting period, you personally (not your lawyer) must send a signed notice and get on a phone call with GoDaddy.
  • The new rules can apply to old disputes. Even if you had a complaint before these terms were published, you may now be subject to the new, stricter rules.
  • GoDaddy can end your account for vague reasons. A new “ethical values” clause lets GoDaddy terminate your service if it decides your behavior conflicts with its standards – without ever defining what those standards are. Ironic!

BUT WILL THESE TERMS HOLD UP LEGALLY?

That’s a fair question.

Legal experts point out that in the European Union, you can’t just call a consumer a “business customer” in a contract and make it stick.

Under EU law, consumer protections are based on the actual nature of the transaction – not the label a company puts on it.

A personal blogger is still a consumer, regardless of what the contract says.

But here’s the problem: even if these terms wouldn’t hold up in court, most people will never take GoDaddy to court.

The new process is expensive, time-consuming, and designed to be exhausting.

The terms don’t have to be legally perfect to be effective at discouraging complaints.

WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS NOW?

First, check GoDaddy’s updated Terms of Service if you’re a current customer.

Know what you’re agreeing to.

Second, ask yourself: does your hosting provider treat you with respect

Do they communicate openly?

Are they transparent about your rights?

At WPX, we believe the relationship between a hosting company and its customers should be simple and honest.
