What is the WPX staging area?

The WPX Staging Area lets you create a safe, test version of your website—so you can experiment freely without affecting your live site. Whether you’re tweaking a theme, testing a plugin, or rebuilding your layout, the Staging Area gives you a secure space to develop with peace of mind.

You can create an exact copy of your live website, make changes or improvements, and later merge those changes back into the live version. Only the new changes made on the Staging site will be applied—any updates made to the live site (like blog comments or new posts) since the staging copy was created will be kept intact during the merge.

Another benefit of the staging website is that you can use it for re-developing your website from different CMS to WordPress without the need to take down your live website.

For example, if your current site is built in HTML and you want to redesign it in WordPress without taking it down, you can use the WPX Staging Area to build the WordPress version in the background.

Our support team is here to help if you need assistance setting it up—so you can start developing right away, no stress.

Your staging copy is created on a subdomain, so there’s nothing too technical involved. You can open and work on it in your browser like any regular site, but don’t worry—it won’t be indexed by search engines.

What are the limitations of creating a Staging copy?

1. The Staging copy uses one website slot from your WPX WordPress hosting plan.
However, if you’re on a WooCommerce plan, the Staging copy does not count toward your website slot limit!

2. Your website’s database must be under 1 GB.
If it exceeds 1 GB, you won’t be able to create a Staging version.

3. Merging won’t be possible if the database is too large.
If the Staging copy exceeds the 1 GB database limit, it cannot be merged back into the live site.

4. The total file size must be under 5 GB.
If your website’s files exceed 5 GB in total, you won’t be able to create a Staging version.

5. WP Multisite is not supported.
The Staging Area cannot be used with WordPress Multisite installations.

6. You must have enough available disk space in your hosting plan to create the Staging copy.

7. Only one Staging copy per site is allowed at a time.

8. WordPress must already be installed on the website you’d like to copy into Staging.

9. Staging only works with WordPress websites.

If you’re ready to start working in a safe development space without affecting your live site, the WPX Staging Area is here to help.
