Subdomain vs Subfolder – What’s the Difference?

When managing multiple websites, a common question is whether subdomains or subfolders count toward your website slots.

If you’re hosting with WPX, the answer is simple, but understanding the difference can help you plan your hosting setup more efficiently.

Let’s break it down.

How website slots work on WPX

Each WPX hosting plan includes a number of website slots, which represent how many separate websites you can host on your account.

Depending on your plan, you can host multiple websites under a single hosting account.

A website slot is typically used when you add a new standalone site with its own domain or subdomain.

Do subdomains count as website slots?

Yes, subdomains use a website slot.

For example:

  • blog.yourdomain.com
  • shop.yourdomain.com
  • members.yourdomain.com

Each of these is treated as a separate website, so they use one of your available website slots in your WPX hosting plan.

Exception: WordPress Multisite

If you’re using a WordPress Multisite installation, subdomains added as aliases do not count against your slot limit.

This allows you to run multiple sites from a single installation when needed.

Do Subfolders Count as Website Slots?

No, subfolders do NOT use additional slots.

Subfolders are paths under your main domain, such as:

  • yourdomain.com/blog
  • yourdomain.com/store
  • yourdomain.com/members

You can create unlimited subfolders without using additional website slots.

However, there’s one important thing to keep in mind.

They share the same Resources

All subfolders operate under the same main website slot, meaning they share the same:

  • CPU resources
  • RAM allocation
  • disk resources

So while you can create many subfolder sites, they all run on the same website resources.

Which option should you choose?

It depends on your goals.

Use Subdomains if you want:

  • Completely separate websites
  • Different WordPress installations
  • Separate SEO strategies

Use Subfolders if you want:

  • Different sections under one brand
  • One shared WordPress installation
  • Maximum efficiency with your hosting slots

Need More Website Slots?

If you’re planning to run multiple projects, upgrading your hosting plan can give you more flexibility.

With WPX, you can easily scale from Starter → Business → Professional Agency, allowing you to host more websites as your portfolio grows.
