Do subdomains & subfolders take up from my hosting slots in my WPX plan?

Depending on which plan you select, your hosting account will be allocated 5, 15, or 35 website slots for WordPress plans, and 1, 3, and 5 if you choose a WooCommerce plan.

A common question that we are asked is whether subdomains and subfolders count as slots in the website allowance.

Subdomains take up hosting slots

In short, subdomains do take up available slots in your hosting plan (except for WP Multisite installations).

If you are using subdomains for your Multisite installation with Subdomains, those need to be added as aliases in your hosting plan. Aliases do not take up your hosting slots.

Subfolders don’t take up hosting slots

Subfolders do not take up additional hosting slots. However, they share the allocated resources of the main website slot. This means you can create unlimited subfolders with different websites under a single domain without using additional slots. Keep in mind that all subfolder-based websites will share the same resources.

Summary:

  • Subdomains = count toward your hosting slot limit (except for WP Multisite aliases).
  • Subfolders = do not count toward your slot limit but share resources with the primary website.
